Pastor’s Piece

Ever been into a “Lush”store?  The bath bombs, dusting powders, face masks, body sprays and assorted products combine to create an overpowering fragrance as one walks in.  All sorts of smells vie for your attention!  The “Lush” experience (and other gift stores which stock incense etc) reminds me of the fact that in our world all sorts of “smells” or beliefs or opinions clamour to be heard and believed.  Last year’s U.S. election and the U.K. vote to leave the E.U. are now understood by many to demonstrate the victory of “fake news” over solid facts.  But maybe that’s just my opinion!

Confused?  I’m not surprised!  Fortunately, as followers of Jesus, we have been entrusted with a beautiful fragrance the world needs to smell.  (How’s that for extending my metaphor a bit too far?)  Here it is:  2 Corinthians 2:14:  “God … uses us to spread the aroma of the knowledge of him everywhere.”  In a world of competing viewpoints, we can point to the most important thing: knowing God through Jesus Christ.  As we consider our mission this Sunday, may we be “lush” fragrances that stand out and offer genuine hope in a confusing world.
